Spiritual Awakening: Pink, What Does It Mean?
In the month of October the color pink represents breast cancer or breast health awareness. The NFL along with a partnership with The American Cancer Society have teamed up to encourage women to get screened for breast cancer. I personally am asking everyone to participate in POINTS FOR THE CURE, a program where fans pick their team for 1 week during the season and pledge to donate $.25(25 cents) per point their team scores and then they visit http://main.acsevents.org/goto/jdoog1 and make their donation to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Their is something very spiritual about being able to bring people together to celebrate the strength of those who have survived breast cancer, remember those who have lost their battle to breast cancer, and fight back so future generations do not have to hear the words you have breast cancer. This is a form of cancer that if detected early can be beaten. Please be an action taker and help to support my efforts to help those touched by breast cancer.
As I was writing this entry I began to think what does the color pink represent and here is what I found.
The meaning of the color pink is unconditional love and nurturing. The color pink represents compassion, nurturing and love. The color pink, created by combining white and red, is the color most often associated with girls, especially babies. In 1597, Shakespeare used the word pink to describe a feeling. “In the pink” is a phrase that means feeling good and doing well.
Emotional Qualities
-
The color pink represents compassion, nurturing and love, as well as self-worth, tenderness, caring and acceptance.
Color Therapy
-
People exposed to the color pink exhibit less stress, violence and aggression. It is also one reason that some prisons make their inmates wear pink uniforms and live in pink cells.
Chakra
-
The pink chakra is the heart area. Individuals who are in balance have a strong pink chakra and are the type to “give someone the shirt off their back.”
Flowers
-
Pink flowers project joy, innocence and youth. Pink carnations are a token of gratitude. Giving pink roses is a gesture of admiration. Pink flower arrangements represent joy and happiness.
Gemstone Properties
-
Those who believe in the power of crystals believe that pink gemstones can help people relax. Rose quartz can help people calm themselves, reduce negativity and promote contentment, while carrying a pink sapphire helps reduce friction
Spiritual Awakening: Breast Cancer Survivors Share Their Stories: A Reason To Wear Pink!!!!
Wanda Sykes
The comedienne discovered she had “stage-zero” breast cancer during a follow-up to her breast reduction surgery. Since she had a history of cancer on her mother’s side of the family, Sykes, 47, decided to have a preventive double mastectomy. “I had both breasts removed, because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer,” she explained on The Ellen Degeneres Show.
Edie Falco
Actress Edie Falco, known for her roles on The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie, learned she had stage 1 breast cancer in September 2003. In an interview with Health magazine, Falco related that, at first, the breast cancer diagnosis left her gasping for breath until she realized she was a strong woman and could fight it. Now, seven years later, not only is her career flourishing, but she has also adopted two children.
Peter Criss
If you’re like many people, you might think that only women can get breast cancer. In 2009, Peter Criss of the rock group Kiss told CNN.com that he felt like “the luckiest man on the planet” after surviving the breast cancer he first noticed as a lump in his left breast two years earlier. Today he’s still making music, working on his autobiography, and trying to get the word out that, yes, men are also susceptible to this disease.
Robin Roberts
Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts has racked up many impressive interviews over the years; she was the first journalist to interview Barack Obama after he was sworn in as president. The newscaster chose to take on her battle with breast cancer publicly, announcing her diagnosis in 2007 after discovering a lump during a self-exam at age 46. She has since been an advocate for awareness and early detection. (Last year when a medical panel recommended that women wait until age 50 to begin routine mammograms, she told Essence she “was floored.”) Roberts most recently participated in the 2010 Stand Up 2 Cancer fundraising television special.
Richard Roundtree
Best known for his role as sex-machine private detective John Shaft in the 1970 film Shaft, Richard Roundtree is proof that breast cancer affects men, too. Roundtree discovered a lump in his right breast in 1993 and received chemotherapy, radiation treatments and a mastectomy. He has acted in a number of TV shows and films, including the 2000 Shaft remake, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Roundtree, 68, is now a breast cancer advocate, working with the advocacy group Susan G. Komen for the Cure to raise men’s awareness and encourage early detection. Look for Roundtree in the films Retreat! and This Bitter Earth, out later this year.
Now that we know the reason why pink was chosen as the color for breast cancer awareness let us all come together and encourage both men and women to get screened as early detection is the key. There is something very spiritually uplifting in knowing that you are touching and saving lives. Please share your stories here under comments.
